Interest groups are donating big bucks to the term limits reform campaign.
The California Teachers Association and the Los Angeles Political Action Committee each gave $250,000.
The California State Council on Service Employees donated $200,000.
And the California Hospital Association contributed $100,000.
Weaker term limits is a cause dear to Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and would allow him to keep his powerful post.
Derek Cressman/The Poplar Institute: "Big labor unions and big corporations are giving money to these term limit efforts in an effort to curry favor with the Legislative leaders."
But Speaker Nunez insists big donors do not influence how lawmakers vote.
Assm. Speaker Fabian Nunez/D-Los Angeles: "If it's good public policy to vote against, do something against any one of our contributors, we don't think twice about it."
One donor to Nunez's cause says there's no quid pro quo.
Ray Sherman/California Prison Guards' Union: "We don't expect a thing. We donated to further the public discussion about term limits."
